Savamala is a quarter of Belgrade situated on the river Sava and was the first modern district of the city. Once a quarter inhabited by Belgrade’s social elite, today’s Savamala is literally a transit route, with its streets overrun by heavy traffic. Beautiful buildings, dating from the late 19th and early 20th century, are now dilapidated and covered by thick layers of soot. Savamala, once a jewel of Belgrade, is now decaying.
Its position, its paradoxical mixture of opposites (new and old, poor and rich, nature and industry), historical significance and beautiful architecture make it a rich platform for tours and urban exploration. Unfortunately, these concepts are still largely undeveloped and virtually non-existent in this part of the city.
The idea of Audio walk: Savamala is to do an interesting audio walk through the past, the present and the future of this quarter, which would help promote it and develop its potential, introducing its rich history to the participants of the walk, raising public awareness about its importance and drawing attention to the important buildings and locations that have been neglected.
Similar to a successful audio walk realized in Stuttgart in 2012/2013 in cooperation with flanerie.labor from Stuttgart and Serbian Academic Network “Nikola Tesla”, this audio guide is a story about an elderly resident of Savamala who retells its history through the memories of his childhood, comparing, at the same time, the Savamala of the past with that of the present, and inviting the listener to think about its future.
The story, which is a mixture of fiction and facts, encompasses several important locations in Savamala, such as, for example, Geozavod, the Spanish House, the Branko’s bridge. It is recorded in two languages (Serbian and English) and separated into several sections. The participants of the walk (up to 10 of them) get mp3 players with the recorded story and the maps of the locations. They can choose their own language of preference, and also their own route for the walk, since it is not fixed per se. They visit the locations, where they play the corresponding audio file. Then they listen to the story of that particular place told through the memories of the old man. While they are listening, they are welcome to write down their impressions of the place and compare it with the story. Finally, having finished the walk, they can share their impressions.

Simon Marić is a writer from Belgrade. He has published two books so far (poetry and prose for children).
As a member of Goethe-Guerilla, he spent two months in Stuttgart in Autumn 2012, working on an audio guide in collaboration with flanerie.labor from Stuttgart. In Autumn 2013, he returned to Stuttgart where he again collaborated with flanerie.labor on an interactive card game “Where are the horses?” for which he wrote 24 short stories about the horses found on the buildings of Stuttgart.
He got his MA in English language and literature in 2012.
Goethe-Guerilla is a group of young people between 20 and 25 that are gathered around Goethe Institute in Belgrade with a goal to organize and promote cultural manifestations in the city. They have so far performed numerous actions in the city (some of them being: the first Open Library in Belgrade, Off-Guide Savamala, Virtual museum of Yugoslavian ships). The focus of their actions for the past two years has been the city quarter Savamala. The current generation is the fifth generation of Goethe-Guerilla.
