Between Urban Practices and Participatory Art - discussing ZK/U's Current Project Hacking Urban Furniture project and meeting Miodrag Kuč
@ ZK/U (Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik) Siemensstraße 27, 10551 Berlin

FB event: http://bit.ly/2uUN5Gk
What is the border (if there is one..) between socio-cultural initiatives/social activism/urban practices and participatory artistic practices? While the previous implays and attempt to improve living and social urban conditions, the letter traditionally has no such moral or ethical commitment, but still utilises participation.
In this meeting we will meet Miodrag Kuč, an interdisciplinary artist and urban theorist, trained as architect / urban planner in various cultural settings and a project coordinator at ZK/U (Centre for Art and Urbanistics) Berlin.
We will discuss ZK/U's current project HUF - Hacking Urban Furniture:
Bus stops, public bathrooms, benches, trash bins, billboards...For the last 30 years, street furniture and outdoor advertising have defined the grammar of our cities. The ‘Hacking Urban Furniture’ project wishes to examine this sector, which so strongly defines the public space in our cities: In times of private-public partnerships (PPP), requests for increased citizen-participation, new production techniques and fantasies of economic optimization, how can such prominent public objects be designed, produced, maintained and sustained differently? What can participation processes, which are prototypical for the handling of public space, look like?
The ZK/U sees itself as a laboratory for inter- and trans-disciplinary activities centered on the phenomenon of “the city”. ZK/U promotes international exchange on global issues, in the light of what is happening in one’s own backyard. Working with local and international partners, ZK/U residencies brings together critical minds at the cutting-edge of artistic production and urban research.

Is there Love in Berlin? – Participatory, Performative Lecture with Camila Rhodi
@Meuh, Reuterstraße 13, 12053, Berlin, Germany
23/08/17, 19:30-21:30
25/08/17, 19:30-21:30
Language: Portuguese/English
FB event: http://bit.ly/2ujiBKo
Based on intimate life stories, without fearing sexual ethics, gender norms and the tyranny of political correctness, the lecture ‘Is there love in Berlin?’ proposes an existential reflexion upon the strong dependence on love.
After collecting stories in the neighborhood of Neukölln, Rhodi invites the audience to a lecture-performance about the sometimes positive, sometimes tragic personal and universal stories of love in Berlin. She will touch on the compulsive drive to consume love as an expression of primal needs such as the need for care, nourishment, safety, belonging, emotional intimacy and validation. ‘Is there love in Berlin?’ connects love and addiction and their relation with capitalism, gender and social class, taking in consideration the contemporary experience of virtual relations and the blurring of the boundaries between the public and the private.
Attempting to deconstruct patriarchal structures of power and oppression mechanisms, Rhodi applies the aesthetics of the ‘personal is political’ as an empowering creative tool.

"A Dinner in a House in a City" - A guided talk about the question "how do we live in the city in 2017?"
@ Wanda Dubrau House, Lichtenrader Str. 12, 12049 Berlin
24/08/17 19:30
Language: English/German
FB event: http://bit.ly/2u3De2e
Wanda Dubrau opens her four walls to the audience for a collective dinner and guided exchange about how we live in the city in 2017.
In the talk she will introduce her current project "mein Haus", reflecting on topics such as neighborhood, migration, gentrification, communities in the city, choice, coincidence, good change, bad change. We will not only talk about the current living situation in Berlin, but also those in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem as we´ll have guests from there sharing the table. The evening will end in a neighborhood bar with Schnaps.
"Mein Haus" deals with the relations to the people I live door to door with. I want to analyse how can we overcome anonymity - how the inhabitants of a house can emerge as a community. How can people in a house support each other besides taking care of eachothers post? How far can tenants shape their environment? First step, is an invitation to all tenants of my house for cake and coffee in my flat. "Mein Haus" will be a long term project with the goal of shaping a social sculpture in Lichtenraderstr. 12

What are the Needs of Refugees in Berlin? - Workshop with Rula Daood
Language: Arabic
FB event: http://bit.ly/2ujjdQi
Through conversation and interviews, Rula Daood tried to understand what are the most urgent needs and difficulties refugees, living in camps or those who already settled in private houses in Berlin, face. Many issues came up but most prominently were the difficulties that arise between the young generation who is trying to assimilate in their new western environment and the older generation who leads a more traditional lifestyle. Many of the young people in camps, face taboos, restrictions and prejudice that emerge from the struggle between two different cultures, customs and lifestyles. Choosing a path which is different from the one your family is costumed to, can raise many concerns and sometimes even fear of being perceived as disrespectful or rebellious.
Daood, will lead a workshop for families that aims to improve the communication between grandparent, parents and their adult kids. The purpose of the workshop is to try to encourage a dialogue between the participants about how each one perceives their own lifestyle now that they are living a foreign country and support young people in their attempt to integrate.
