Each Thursday evening, Tracks in a Box invites audience and experts for a Sprechstunde (consultation hour) with the curators, opening up the discussion about how to archive artworks that are inherently ephemeral, non-material, public and participatory.

UNBOXED: How does the archive work? with Rebecca Kahn Rebecca Kahn's research focuses on how narratives of identity and memory can be traced through archival and museum collections, and how counter-archives for underrepresented and non-hegemonic knowledge function. In 2019 she co-curated the exhibition Unboxed at the Schwules Museum, and is currently working on a project using the archival collections at Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action (GALA) in Johannesburg, South Africa. During this Sprechstunde, we will explain and question the workings of the Tracks in a Box archive together with Rebecca Kahn, and reflect on processes of meaning-making and story-telling through archival collections |

UNBOXED: Wie funktioniert das Archiv? mit Rebecca Kahn Rebecca Kahn’s Forschung behandelt, wie Narrativen der Identität und der Erinnerung durch Archivierung und Museumskollektionen zurückverfolgt werden können aber auch, wie Gegenarchive für unterrepräsentiertes und nicht-hegemonisches Wissen funktionieren. In 2019 ko-kuratierte sie die Ausstellung Unboxed im Schwulen Museum und arbeitet derzeit an einem Projekt, das die Archivsammlungen des Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action (GALA) in Johannesburg, Südafrika, verwendet. Während dieser Sprechstunde erklären und hinterfragen wir die Arbeitsweise von Tracks in a Box gemeinsam mit Rebecca Kahn und reflektieren so die Prozesse der Sinnproduktion und des Storytellings anhand von Archivsammlungen. |

Naama Ityel guides a Participatory Walk based on Todd Shalom’s Elastic City Prompts + Skype with the author
Todd Shalom works in visual media and participatory performance. He is the founder and director of Elastic City , a New York-based non-profit organization that produced over 200 participatory walks and events for the public between 2010 and 2016. His new book Elastic City: Prompts for Participatory Walks includes instructions (aka prompts) from more than 35 artists' walks along with a section that features his insights and philosophy. Reading Todd Shalom’s book as an archive of participatory walks, this Sprechstunde looks at alternative ways of preserving and re-activating the work.
Naama Tomaszpolski Ityel is a Berlin-based dancer, choreographer, somatic educator and a body activist. She graduated “Mate Asher dance academy“ and SEAD (Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance). Danced for choreographers such as: “Emanuel Gat Dance Company“, Colette Sadler, Anne-Mareike Hess and Shai Faran. In the last few years, Naama , in collaboration with various artist, is realising relational workshops about visual experience, social themes, space and body that incorporate theory, visual information and physical practice. She gave workshops in the UDK, ZKR, Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst in Aachen, Floating university, Tempelhof Flughafen and Galerie Lisa Kandlhofer in Wien.

OUTSIDE OF THE BOX: Was ist NICHT im Archiv? Mit Jasmina Al-Qaisi Jasmina Al-Qaisi ist Visuelle Ethnographin und Kulturkorrespondentin. Sie schreibt wie sie spricht in ihrem eigenen Englisch, das irgendwo zwischen Klang und visueller Poesie eingeordnet werden kann. Derzeit lebt sie in Berlin versteckt im Archiv des Kunst- und Projektraums SAVVY Contemporary. Das SAVVY.doc-Archiv beherbergt dabei eine Vielzahl geschriebener Texte, von Kritischer Theorie bis hin zu Literatur, von Kunstmagazinen bis hin zu politischen Analysen, von Ausstellungskatalogen bis hin zu Gedichtsbändern. Es ist ein Archiv, das konstant in seiner Diversität sowie Komplexität zu wachsen scheint. In dieser letzten Sprechstunde nähern wir uns dem Archiv als ultimativ subjektiv und unumgänglich fehlerhaft und unvollständig – wodurch das Nicht-Archivierte genau das zu werden scheint, was wir eigentlich beibehalten wollen. |

OUTSIDE OF THE BOX: What is NOT in the archive? with Jasmina Al-Qaisi Jasmina Al-Qaisi is formally a visual ethnographer and a cultural correspondent. She writes as she speaks in her own English, caught between sound and visual poetry. She lives in Berlin and hides in the archive of the art and project space SAVVY Contemporary. The SAVVY.doc archive is home to a multitude of written texts spanning from critical theory to literature, from art magazine to political analysis, from exhibition catalogues to poetry collections, constantly growing in its diversity and complexity. This final Sprechstunde approaches the archive as an ultimately subjective and embodied, and inevitably partial and flawed practice, and suggests that what is not in the archive might be exactly what we strive to maintain. |
