Strays is a tour of non-human Berlin. Strays participants work alone.
Book a tour, make your way to your allocated starting point and at the appointed time you will receive a series of instructions on your phone which will lead you into a realm of birds and weeds, trees and beetles, dirt and stones.
Collecting samples, noting down your finds, sharing your surroundings with your unseen guide – the information you compile as you roam the streets will come together with other strays' experiences to create an idiosyncratic field guide to the area. Strays aims to explore the overlapping of human and non-human domains, and to see Berlin's public spaces in a new way.

_author / guide:
Melissa Deerson is an Australian visual artist and writer who uses video, text, installation, ad-hoc objects and public projects to explore the relationship between nature and culture. She recently received an Australia Council ArtStart grant and a Copyright Agency grant, which are enabling her to travel to the US to continue her research, where she will be participating in a Bio Art residency at the School of Visual Art, New York. She has lived in Berlin previously.
Melissa's work (often humorously) explores the blurry boundaries between human and non-human domains. Her art revolves around questions such as: how do we define our concept of 'aliveness' and 'the natural' - and when does nature become art? How insidious are our alterations and interventions into the natural world and what does this mean for our place in a wider ecological setting? Do these interventions only go one way? And how does the way we name, categorise and mythologise the non-human reflect and impact on the way we view that sphere?
